Comics:
– IDW will publish “Sons of Star Trek,” a four-part miniseries by writer Morgan Hampton and artist Angel Hernandez. It will follow Jake Sisko and Alexander Rozhenko in the wake of the devastating ‘Day of Blood’ crossover, as they are transported to an alternate universe where they are Starfleet officers. “As officers aboard the U.S.S. Burton, Jake and Alexander encounter alternate versions of other children of Starfleet legends who show them they all may have a bit more in common than it would seem.” It will debut March 13, 2024. They also revealed a “Defiant Annual” by Christopher Cantwell and Ramon Rosanas for January, that will see Tasha Yar and her daughter Sela cross paths via time travel.
– Marvel announced a “Jackpot” one-shot tying into ‘Gang War,’ written by Celeste Bronfman (who wrote the Mary Jane Watson back-up in this year’s “Amazing Spider-Man” #31), and penciled by Joey Vazquez. The book will be released on January 17. Additionally, they revealed Preeti Chhibber and E.J. Su will tackle the next arc of the Infinity Comics series “Spider-Man Unlimited,” which will follow Spider-Boy during the crossover; it will begin with issue #19 in January.
– Mattel’s Monster High toy line is going to be adapted into comic books by IDW Publishing, and original graphic novels by Abrams Books. IDW will kick off their line with a Free Comic Book Day issue on May 4, 2024, featuring an original story, and an extended preview of their first series, “Monster High: New Scaremester.” Created by Garrett Sander in 2010, Monster High follows a group of teenage girls based on classic monsters (eg. Frankie Stein, Draculaura etc.) The dolls have spawned TV movies and an animated series on Nickelodeon, plus video games, prose novels, and two spin-off franchises.
– DC announced ‘Superman Superstars,’ a line of stories from different creative teams that will run in “Action Comics.” It will kick off with Jason Aaron and John Timms’s three-part ‘I, Bizarro’ in January’s issue #1061, and continue with Joshua Williamson and Rafa Sandoval’s ‘House of Braniac’ in April’s #1064. The latter will cross over with Williamson’s “Superman” run, and see Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, Lobo, Supergirl et al. contend with the Coluan villain and a Czarnian army. The line will mark the first Superman story from Aaron, who is making his return to DC with “Batman: Off-World” next month. Phillip Kennedy Johnson subsequently confirmed December’s “Action Comics Annual” will mark the end of his run on the title.

– Mad Cave Studios revealed the creative teams for their upcoming “Flash Gordon” and “Gatchaman” titles. Cullen Bunn will team up with artist Chris Batista on “Gatchaman,” which will also receive spin-offs from writer Steve Orlando and artist Tommy Lee Edwards, all kicking off June 2024. Former “Flash” writer Jeremy Adams, meanwhile, will pen “Flash Gordon,” which begins July 2024.
– ComiXology announced “Boxed,” an A.I.-themed thriller by Mark Sable and Jeremy Haun (who previously collaborated on “Two-Face: Year One”), plus colorist Nick Filardi and letterer Thomas Mauer. Set in the near future, it follows an agency tasked with containing rogue A.I., and particularly one agent, who’ll have to rekindle his relationship with a counterintelligence program called Pandora, to hunt down another wayward intelligence. The first issue will be released on Amazon on November 21, 2023.
– The platform also announced “Nice Jewish Boys,” a five-part crime drama by “Savor” writer Neil Kleid and artist John Broglia. Set in New Jersey, the book follows Jake Levin, a Modern Orthodox Jew struggling to pay his bills, who “gets drawn into a triangle of secrets when he moonlights for his best friend — a kosher ‘caterer-turned-criminal’ — who is wanted by the FBI thanks to their other friend — a ‘failed entrepreneur-turned-informant.'” Colored by Ellie Wright, the series begins November 7.
Continued below– Furthermore, comiXology announced the third and final season of Chip Zdarsky and Jason Loo’s vampire superhero title “The All-Nighter,” and “Astonishing Times: Rise of the Kokin,” a five-part prequel to Frank Barbiere, Arris Quinones, and Ruairi Coleman’s 2021 series by the same creative team. The latter will tell the story of the titular cybernetic samurai decades before the original comic. “The All-Nighter” #11 releases October 31, while “Rise of the Kokin” will debut in January 2024.

Via The Beat, during last night’s Scholastic Graphix NYCC 2023 Preview Party, “The Witch Boy” creator Molly Knox Ostertag took the opportunity to criticize the publisher over recent reports they are allowing schools and libraries to opt out of offering diverse releases at book fairs. Ostertag, who was the last speaker of the night, said she understood the reasons for the decision, but that the publisher should not give into people holding fascistic views, and that such books provide a lifeline to trans and non-binary children. Scholastic had no comment, although Ostertag received a loud applause for her speech.
