Image Comics have announced “Sins of the Black Flamingo,” a five-part, occult noir series from the entirely LGBTQ+ creative team of writer Andrew Wheeler (“Another Castle”), artist Travis Moore (“Wonder Woman”), colorist Tamra Bonvillain (“Crush & Lobo”) and letterer Aditya Bidikar (“Arkham City: The Order of the World”).
The book follows Sebastian Harlow, aka the Black Flamingo, “a flamboyant and narcissistic thief who gets his kicks stealing mystic artifacts from the wealthy and corrupt of Miami’s occult underground. But when his latest job leads him to his biggest score so far, the hedonistic outlaw discovers something he wasn’t looking for — something to believe in.”
Wheeler said of the series’ inspiration, “Positive representation is vitally important. But we also need complicated, messy, queer anti-heroes, and the Black Flamingo is messy as f*ck!” He added, “With ‘Sins of the Black Flamingo,’ I want to introduce readers to a glamorous, tawdry world of dark secrets and queer spectacle that’s unlike anything they’ve experienced before. Thanks to the incredible talents of Travis, Tamra, and Aditya, I think that’s exactly what readers are going to get! These artists are the best in the business, and I’m so proud to be working with them!”
Issue #1 will be released on June 29, at the end of Pride Month. In further Image news, a pair of high profile Substack comics also had the dates of their previously promised print releases set for June: James Tynion IV and Gavin Fullerton’s horror comic “The Closet,” and Chip Zdarsky’s “Public Domain.” Both Tynion and Zdarsky were some of the earliest announced creators to set projects at Substack last August, and both had indicated that their stories would eventually get a physical edition.
“The Closet” is a three-issue miniseries that follows a family grappling with their unhappy home life when their young son begins insisting there’s a monster in the closet. “Public Domain” follows the sons of a legendary comic book artist who grapple with a corporation over their father’s superhero creation. “The Closet” #1 comes out on June 1, and “Public Domain” #1 will follow on June 29.
