At io9, IDW Publishing have announced “Star Trek vs. Transformers,” a four-issue comic book teaming up the crew of Captain Kirk’s Enterprise with Optimus Prime’s Autobots. The comic is written by John Barber and Mike Johnson, who have respectively been the primary writer of IDW’s “Star Trek” and “Transformers” lines, with art by Philip Murphy (“Adventure Time/Regular Show”) and colorist Leonardo Ito (“Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures”).

To be precise, the story will begin with the USS Enterprise answering a distress call on the edge of Klingon space, and finding a dilithium mine under attack from 20th century-era jets and helicopters. The comic’s look is heavily based on the 1970s Star Trek: The Animated Series, as well as the 1984 Transformers cartoon. It will mix characters from the animated Star Trek, such as Lieutenant M’Ress and Arex, with more recent Transformers characters like Windblade.

“This is a crossover several decades in the making, and we could not be more thrilled to bring it to fans,” Johnson said in the press release provided to io9. “John and I are having a blast writing the first meeting of Starfleet and Cybertronians, and Phil is the perfect artist to bring these two franchises together on the page.”

Both writers have had fun writing crossovers for the respective properties they’ve been entrusted with, like “Transformers vs. G.I. Joe” or “Star Trek/Green Lantern,” but this marks the first meeting for both “Star Trek” and “Transformers” at IDW. Both properties were among the earliest comic book licences IDW acquired in the 2000s, and only came close to crossing over during 2011’s event storyline ‘Infestation.’

“Star Trek vs. Transformers” #1 will be released in September: head on over to io9 to check out the retailer incentive cover.
