– BOOM! Studios announced Cecil Castellucci’s “Girl on Film,” a graphic memoir illustrated by Vicky Leta, Jon Berg, V. Gagnon, and Melissa Duffy. The book will see Castellucci explore an era of her life with each one of the artists, “with the flavor of different film genres,” as she went from theater kid, to indie musician, and her current life as an author and comic book writer. You can read an interview with Castellucci at Publishers Weekly announcing the book here, and a press release here. “Girl on Film” will be published in November.
– HarperCollins’ Morrow Gift will release a print edition of Instagram cartoonist Nathan W. Pyle’s “Strange Planet” on November 19, 2019. The 144-page hardcover book, which will include never-before-seen strips, revolves around a group of aliens exploring life on Earth, and will retail at $14.99.
– Aubrey Sitterson and Fico Ossio’s upcoming Dark Horse series “No One Left to Fight” is to be the subject of a unique preorder campaign, with online subscription packages containing all five issues and more being made available at Sitterson’s website. Sitterson elaborated on his plans to Newsweek, explaining he is trying to get the comic into the hands of readers who find comic book stores inaccessible.
– Hulu and Marvel TV announced two new live-action series, Ghost Rider and Helstrom. The former will see Gabriel Luna reprise his role as Robbie Reyes from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while the second series will tell the story of Daimon and Ana Helstrom, vigilante siblings whose father was a mysterious and powerful serial killer. Ingrid Escajeda (Justified) serve as showrunner on Ghost Rider, and Paul Zbyszewski (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., LOST) will oversee Helstrom. Both shows, which will join Runaways and the upcoming slate of animated series on the platform, will kickstart a new interconnected line of shows similar to the canceled Netflix universe, and are expected to debut sometime next year.
– Marvel.com unveiled Stephanie Hans’s cover for author Mackenzi Lee’s upcoming prose novel, Loki: Where Mischief Lies. The young adult book, which is intended as the first in a trilogy, sees young Loki searching for Amora the Enchantress in 19th century London. The book will be published on September 3, 2019.
– Variety reports Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior is set to play Ratcatcher in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. In DC Comics, Ratcatcher is a minor (and male) Batman villain who wields control of an army of rats. The trade also revealed John Cena has been cast in an unnamed role. The Suicide Squad is set for release August 6, 2021.
– Finally, HBO released three teasers for the upcoming Watchmen series (which you can view at CBR) depicting the show’s new version of the American flag, a pirate flag evoking the comic’s ‘Tales of the Black Freighter’ strip, and a hint at Dr. Manhattan’s return. The show will debut sometime later this year.
