– Marvel has announced The Mighty Marvel Calendar Book: A Visual History. Published by Abrams Books, the book by Chris Ryall compiles the full set of Marvel calendars from 1975 to 1981 into a single volume. These calendars feature art from Marvel greats such as Jack Kirby, John Buscema, John Byrne, Frank Miller, Walter Simonson, Gil Kane, George Perez, Gene Colan, Jim Starlin, Sal Buscema, Mike Ploog, and many more. The book also opens with an introduction from Roy Thomas. It is due out December 3, 2023, but can be preordered today.
– Mad Cave Studios has brought on three new editors, Adam Wallenta, Marla Eizik, and Christina Harrington. Wallenta is a 30-year industry veteran, best known for the Ringo-nominated “Punk Taco,” and the official Public Enemy comic. Eizik has over a decade of writing and editing experience, working for Image and TKO Studios. Harrington is an M.F.A. graduate from Sarah Lawrence College, also with a decade of experience under her belt, having been a managing editor at AfterShock and part of the X-Men editorial group at Marvel.
– Nikolas Draper-Ivey teased his new project “Gnashing of Teeth.” Not much is known about the project, other than the few images and description that Draper-Ivy tweeted, along with the mention of “cool meetings” at San Diego Comic-Con. “AI vs vampires vs the human billionaires that created them both” is how he describes the project.
– The animated Scooby-Doo/Krypto the Super Dog crossover leaked in a 2022 Warner Bros. data breach has been officially announced by the studio. Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! will be available digitally in the US and on DVD at Walmart on September 26, 2023, with a Canadian release on the same day, and a wide DVD release on October 24, 2023. The film will see the Mystery Machine gang investigate the disappearance of the Justice League, and co-star Nolan North as the Joker and Superman, Tara Strong as Lois Lane and Harley Quinn, Fred Tatasciore as Solomon Grundy and Perry White, and James Arnold Taylor as Jimmy Olsen and “Rex Ruthor.” You can view the trailer here.
– Donald Glover and his brother Stephen have been tapped to write the Lando series for Disney+. The deal was made before the WGA strike. The project was originally announced in December 2020, with Dear White People creator Justin Simien attached, though it seems Simien will not be a part of the series, having stated last week Lucasfilm haven’t spoken to him since the show was revealed. Donald Glover portrayed Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.
– Paramount Pictures released the final trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The new trailer gives us an extended look at the supporting cast and villains of the upcoming animated feature, which is set to hit theaters on Wednesday, August 2, with sneak previews starting in select theaters on Saturday, July 29. To tie in with the upcoming film, the studio will be adding several TMNT movies and TV shows to Paramount+ on August 1, include the Michael Bay franchise, and the original ’90s trilogy.
– Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron will open the 48th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 7, at the Roy Thomson Hall. This will not be the first Studio Ghibli to appear at the festival, however it is the first time either a Japanese film or an animated film served at the Opening Night Gala Presentation. TIFF will be the first place a non-Japanese audience can see the hand-drawn animated feature, Miyazaki’s first in ten years. It’s set to be distributed in the US by GKIDS.
– “Lupin III’s” resident sharpshooter will headline his own live-action feature on Amazon Prime Video. Jigen Daisuke stars Tetsuji Tamayama as the title gunslinger, reprising his role from 2014’s live-action Lupin III film. It is produced by Amazon Studios with TMS Entertainment, and follows Jigen as he seeks out the world’s greatest gunsmith to repair his trusty Combat Magnum. Hajime Hashimoto directs with a script from Yoshimasa Akamatsu. It will be available to stream on October 14.
– Finally, roughly 40 comic book creators joined the WGA strike‘s picket line yesterday. Rantz Hoseley, editor-in-chief of Z2 comics, organized the gathering, which included WGA members, and non-WGA members who wanted to show support. Hoseley commented, “The idea of recognized authorship, the controls and limitations of corporate use of AI and elimination of human creators — comic book creators are interested in the outcome because these are things that affect all of us.” The picketers included Pornsak Pichetshote, Marc Bernardin, Jeremy Adams, David Avallone, Shawna and Julie Benson, and Joe Henderson.
