Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the weekend. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– On Friday, the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication honored Jessica Jones with a Peabody Award. Judges said the show, produced by Netflix and Marvel, “asks unpopular questions about power and consent, while constructing vivid and compelling characters.” Krysten Ritter was signaled out for her performance , especially in helping deliver the “strengths and vulnerability” of the character, “a hard-boiled private detective who has rejected the role of superhero but must still figure out how to overcome the evil that threatens her, her friends and her community.” Jessica Jones has been renewed for a second season.
– Marvel released a teaser image for their upcoming “Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill” thing, with the cryptic quote: “I knew this was my chance to be a hero.” Ken Godberson pointed out to me that this is Rich Rider’s Nova symbol. “Goodie!,” he said. “I get to rail on Marvel for brining [sic] back a character that had a complete character arc & great end.” Contributor emeritus Vince Ostrowski mentioned, “Anyone that thinks Marvel has a cleaner continuity than DC is absolutely nuts.” In pure corporate synergy that would make Jack Donaghy proud, the rumor going around is that Rider’s coming back because Marvel Studios might have him appear in an upcoming movie. Mainstream corporate superhero comics, everyone!
– Speaking of Marvel Studios: it looks like they’ve officially removed Inhumans from their Phase Three schedule.
– Titan Comics has announced their next “Doctor Who” event: “Doctor Who: Supremacy of the Cybermen”. Written by George Mann and Cavan Scott with art by Alessandro Vitti, the series will apparently feature the Ninth Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, the Eleventh Doctor, and the Twelfth Doctor, not to mention all their companions, battling the titular Cybermen. In other Doctor Who news: the new companion for the TV series has been revealed.
– Check out the shortlist for the 2nd Annual Dwayne McDuffie Awards for Kids’ Comics. Among the nominees are the seventh volume of Ted Naifeh’s “Courtney Crumrin,” Konami Kanata’s “Chi’s Sweet Home,” “Lumberjanes”, “Human Body Theater” by Maris Wicks, and “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.” There’s some great stuff there you can enjoy regardless of your age!
– On Friday, we asked what you thought of the Eisner nominations. Well, the results are in! At the time of this writing:
36% of voters thought the nominations were deserving but there were some major omissions. (Ed. for one, Zainab Akhtar not getting recognition for her work at the recently-closed Comics & Cola was egregious.)
32% of voters disagreed with many of the nominees — with commenters bemoaning no representation of “Ody-C” or Tom King or Valiant.
17% of the votes said they had found at least one new book to check out (which is the best!), with 13% of participants saying they thought the nominees were spot on.
Make sure you check back Friday for our next Weekly Readers’ Poll!
