– Despite a troubled production, the Wonder Woman movie has finally started shooting! The first image of the Patty Jenkins-directed, Gal Gadot-starring superhero vehicle also dropped, focusing on a hooded Wonder Woman serving face to something unknown. Already she looks better — more confident, more intelligent, more commanding — than anything Meredith and David Finch have been turning in on the comics side of things. Wonder Woman is slated to release in 2017 and also stars Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and David Thewlis. Created in 1941, this film marks the third appearance of Wonder Woman in theaters, following The LEGO Movie (2014) and the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).
– The super dope comic anthology, “Frontier,” has announced its 2016 lineup of cartoonists. Next year, we’ll see Eleanor Davis, Kelly Kwang, Richie Pope, and Rebecca Sugar contributing material to the magazine, which is published through Ryan Sand’s Youth in Decline site. He’s once again offering a subscription service for the thing, so if you can’t make it to the show, you won’t miss out on the comics themselves. Check out past issues of “Frontier” here.
– Ryan Meinerding is a concept artist who’s been instrumental in developing the look and feel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has released a bunch of artwork for the Phase One batch of flicks.
– Check out this profile of Marvel Director of Content and Character Development and editor, Sana Amanat. It bodes well, I think, for Marvel that Amanat is a major contributor to the direction of its comics line.
– Alex Hirsch has announced that beloved animated show, Gravity Falls, is going to wrap up. “Weirdmageddon II” will premiere Monday, and that will be followed by a one-hour special series finale. “But Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever,” Hirsch says. “The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious- and why you should cherish it while it lasts.”
– Shea Hennum has an overview of the struggle Argentinian cartoonist, Héctor Oesterheld, faced with his government during the 70s. Hennum focuses on Oesterheld’s “The Eternaut” to flesh out the background and horror the cartoonist himself faced.
– On Friday, we asked What Marvel Character Do You Want a Netflix Series for Next? The results are in and:
- Out of 176 votes, 88 of you, for 50% of voters, clamor for a Moon Knight adventure.
- 30 of you would watch a Cloak and Dagger show while 15% think The Punisher should have a chance. 11 peeps thought Elektra needed to be brought back and brought back right, while Blade and Shang-Chi were tied with 10 votes apiece.
- Make sure you check back Friday for this week’s Readers’ Poll!
– Finally, in Webcomics Worth Clicking: “150 Days” is a silent comic about a Chinese prince lost in the Arabian desert, but is rescued by this beautiful wanderer. Illustrated in watercolor-evoking images (I think the cartoonist draws digitally) by Knight JJ, the story is filled with romance and adventure and emotion and beauty. It’s sweet and well done.
