Exclusive: Stuck Between Death and a Hard Place in “Judge Dredd” #23 [Preview]

It’s super exciting to see Judge Death and co. running around the IDW Dredd books, especially with Swierczynski and Daniel’s new additions to the Dark Judge line-up. But, that said, I gotta say that I am super hyped to see Judge Cal’s rise to power. I know we’ve said it before, but these IDW Dredd-World books really have an ‘Ultimate’ comics feel to them. Like what Marvel did with Spider-Man all those years ago, IDW is giving readers a look into the adventures of Judge Dredd that is sometimes quite familiar, sometimes entirely new, and always exciting. These comics are perfect for both the well-read and novice Dredd fans alike.

So, this Judge Cal fella. If you’re new to this world I’m excited that you get to experience the level of insanity this guy works himself up to. For just a taste of the kind of crazy Judge Cal becomes, allow me to introduce Deputy Chief Judge Fish.

That’s right. Judge Fish is his pet goldfish.

In this week’s Judge Dredd #23 we get a little bit of a time jump after last week’s cliffhanger. Dredd has a plan, but it’s got some flaws, and he’s quite literally stuck between the Judge Death ruled Sector One and the rest of the Mega-City, which is under the control of the newly minted Chief Judge Cal. What sort of things have these two less-than-benevolent rulers been up to? Where to Judges Dredd and Anderson stand in the big picture? Is that organic, semi-sentient wall really as fond of Dredd as he thinks it is? Big questions, I know, and you’ve got to read to find the answers!

Check out the solicit below, as well as a number of exclusive images, all courtesy of our friends at IDW.

Judge Dredd #23
Written by Duane Swierczynski
Illustrated by Nelson Daniel

“Black Light District, part 2”—Sector One is under the savage rule of the Dark Judges. The Council of Five has gone underground to survive. And the rest of Mega-City One has been taken over by Judge Cal, who sees this as the perfect opportunity to institute a few tiny changes to your average citizen’s liberty, safety and security. Only Judge Dredd and a barely-alive Cassandra Anderson are able to slip through the borders, leaving them the unenviable task of preventing hell on earth and the mad reign of a despot!
