On Friday, we asked y’all what the biggest retcon in comics was. We felt we assembled a good cross section of the most important/impactful retcons over the years, but apparently we could’ve narrowed it down to just two and still pleased the vast majority of our readers.
43% of you voted that Bucky Barnes not dying and becoming the Winter Soldier was the biggest retcon of all time. It’s pretty hard to argue with that logic, as Bucky was once one of the untouchable deaths in all of comics until, suddenly, he wasn’t. It doesn’t hurt that it was also a masterfully done story, and one that was fantastically adapted for the big screen.
26.6% of you felt that all the Jean Grey shenanigans that happened around ‘The Dark Phoenix Saga’ should be considered the biggest. This is a totally different type of retcon, where it’s not like Jean was ever really left on the shelf for that long, but rather it was a retcon in real time, as opposed to Bucky’s slow burn.
Coming in a distant third was our somewhat cheeky “pretty much everything Hawkman,” which was good for 8.9% of the vote.
