On Friday, we asked for your thoughts on the state of the DC Extended Universe in the wake of the Batgirl movie’s shocking and unprecedented cancellation, which happened partly because the newly merged Warner Bros. Discovery wants to limit the number of DC projects on HBO Max. An overwhelming 53.1 percent of you chose the most negative option, stating that “This is the (latest) death knell for the properties, which will need a total makeover after this disaster of an administration.”
28.6 percent of you were neutral, picking “This won’t have any real change over the quality of DC films moving forward. The moves look dramatic, but the results won’t be.” Only 18.4 percent of you had a positive view, choosing “While there will be casualties like Batgirl and [the TV series] Strange Adventures, the DCEU needs a refocusing, and so this, will ultimately produce better films.”
This is presumably what Warner Bros.’s new CEO David Zaslav intends, but (speaking as someone who chose the middle option) it is very hard to imagine the current studio executives as being people who will choose what is better over what is commercial. After all, they’ve chosen to cancel Batgirl over The Flash, a film that (regardless of whether Batgirl was actually bad or not) will be far more uncomfortable to watch thanks to its lead actor, who is probably the biggest argument now for rebooting the DCEU entirely.
