God I’m sorry this is so late. Halloween really messed with my schedule, but hopefully this will still be of use to you guys. Cheers!
Tonight, in the episode “Crossfire,” we had a few interesting things. It was the THIRD episode featuring Oliver as the lead role, which I found odd and just a little confusing. Is this the shape of things to come? Are we getting a spin off called Star City? How about that sweet goatee? One can only hope. If not, I don’t really like it. What sense does it make for Clark to not be the focus of the episode?
The episode starts with Lois and Clark auditioning for a morning talk show in the vein of Regis & Kelly. Well, it’s really Lois auditioning, with Clark along for the ride to help out. While initially awkward, Clark does such a great job that he not only gets Lois the job, but gets one for himself too. Their first assignment (seemingly put in place to push forth as much sexual tension as humanly possible) is a fluff piece on dating via the internet.
Meanwhile, Oliver goes to an underground fighting match and sees a very tough and attractive girl fighting off a man twice her size in the cage. The fight is interrupted by her pimp, who pulls her out the fight to work the streets again. Yes, for those of you who were curious, this is Mia. Oliver picks her up out of concern, and he gives her the name Speedy because she has a lead foot. Yeah, there’s a bit of a Pretty Woman subplot going on in the arc. This made me curious if the HIV part of her character will show up in later episodes. I know Smallville isn’t 100% accurate, but it would be nice for her to be true to the character.
The two seemingly separate storylines are intertwined when Lois’ net date turned out to be Oliver trying to one last shot at her. But he learned of her feelings for Clark, and he backed off. But not before the pimp comes calling to kill Oliver and take him for all he’s worth, not necessarily in that order. In the end, the day is saved, and Mia looks to have been saved by Oliver for future appearances. One can only hope that the love triangle is on the way out, because it’s
There was actually a great C-plot going on with Tess and Major Zod, one that is probably has the most promise. I won’t go too far into details, but it was one of the best things in the episode. My only caveat however is the awful acting by Zod’s mole on Tess’ staff. He was like a poor man’s Billy Zane, complete with shaved head. He was an awful actor as well. Ugh, He was so wooden; you’d think it was John Cena acting.
Overall, the episode was really well done, and should be watched. This season is probably the best it’s been since season 5, and I’m actually looking forward to each episode now, which is not something I thought I would ever say.
Final Verdict: Tune In
