Artist August: Chip Zdarsky [Art Feature]

To top off today’s Artist August, we bring you our requisite art feature.

Chip Zdarsky is about to meet a brand new audience when “Sex Criminals” drops a month from today (some of which can be seen here and here), but for many people I’d wager his work may be unfamiliar — and that’s a shame.

The first time I ever came across Zdarsky’s work was via Warren Ellis Dot Com, particularly the time he shared an excerpt from his upcoming autobiography, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Supergod. Offering up the 37th chapter of his book as an excerpt, entitled “Who Writes the Watchmen?”, Zdarsky told the story of how he was brought into DC Comics to pitch for “Watchmen 2” (this was when there were rumors about another “Watchmen” but nothing concrete), which featured Rory Shack and some of the funniest full-on butthole you’ll likely read about today.

From there I knew: this guy got my kind of funny.

So with “Sex Criminals” only a month away and two features on it on Multiversity today for you to read here and here (both of which are pretty darn good, if I do say so myself), now is the time to get caught up with the multitude of Zdarsky’s work done so far — a brief snippet you’ll find in this very post.

And, I suppose I should note that it is slightly NSFW — nothing egregious, but I saved the weirder stuff for the end. How could I not?

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."

Artist August: Tom Scioli [Art Feature]

    By | Aug 30, 2014 | Columns

Full disclosure: I had another artist slated for this spot up until quite recently. I went with a pick that I felt was an important artist in the history of comics, and was excited to spotlight their work. However, when I started collecting pieces, I felt nothing. The work, while incredible, didn’t resonate with me […]

Artist August: Liz Prince [Art Feature]

    By | Aug 29, 2014 | Columns

Liz Prince’s comics are exactly the type of comics I want to see more of in the world. Her work lies somewhere between the self-reflection of Jeffery Brown and the raucous energy of James Kochalka, examining herself and her surroundings through the lens of a humorist. Her comics are easily digestible while simultaneously impactful and thought provoking, […]
