Artist August: A Look Inside Four Star Studios

In the windy city of Chicago there lies a far away, magical place. A place where talented creators come together in order to collaborate (and on occasion stop and/or listen), a place where fantasies are taken out of mindspaces and brought to the page in order to share with all of us as we live a collected dream.

That place is Four Star Studios.

Home to Chris Burnham, Sean Dove, Josh Emmons, Mike Norton and Tim Seeley, the following photos were provided to us by today’s Artist August featured artist Jenny Frison. They’re the place where books like “Revival,” “Batman Inc” and “Battlepug” are made for your reading pleasure (among others), as well as where the Making Comics the Four Star Way podcast is recorded.

Four Star Studios was also home to the Double Feature digital comic, for those of you that remember that. Created by a litany of talented creators (including but certainly not limited to Ross Campbell, Ryan Browne, Robbi Rodriguez and Evan “Doc” Shaner among others) and based solely in specific genres, they’re eclectic and fun and a great example of why we love comics in general, to be honest. While none have been made in quite some time, they’re quite worth checking out if you’ve never read them before.

So take a look below and get prepared to ask how you can sign up for an internship.

(Warning: if you’re an avid He-Man and/or Masters of the Universe fan, you may experience fits of extreme jealousy.)

Some people will tell you that Disney is a place where dreams come true. I’d wager after scrolling through these photos, you might tell them that they’re wrong and that your dreams are found in Four Star. Choice is yours, kids!

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."

Artist August: Tom Scioli [Art Feature]

    By | Aug 30, 2014 | Columns

Full disclosure: I had another artist slated for this spot up until quite recently. I went with a pick that I felt was an important artist in the history of comics, and was excited to spotlight their work. However, when I started collecting pieces, I felt nothing. The work, while incredible, didn’t resonate with me […]

Artist August: Liz Prince [Art Feature]

    By | Aug 29, 2014 | Columns

Liz Prince’s comics are exactly the type of comics I want to see more of in the world. Her work lies somewhere between the self-reflection of Jeffery Brown and the raucous energy of James Kochalka, examining herself and her surroundings through the lens of a humorist. Her comics are easily digestible while simultaneously impactful and thought provoking, […]
