Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Black Hammer #7 ($3.99) – We all know how good this book is by now, right? This issue seems like it’ll delve into the story of the titular Black Hammer, the hero who disappeared and may be the key to th ris whole weird deal that the other heroes are caught up in. As always, I’m sure Lemire and Ormston will absolutely kill it.
Powerless #1 ($3.99) – Vault Comics is a new publisher, but already making a solid impact with titles like “Fissure” and “Heathen”. Their latest release is “Powerless”, a story set in a world where everyone has superpowers of some kind. While it’s a somewhat familiar twist on the superhero genre, it seems like it just might tell a worthwhile story by the time it’s done. Definitely worth a look.
Birthright #23 ($2.99) – “Birthright” is steadily amping up the excitement and intrigue as it moves closer to the 25th issue. Rya is about to have a baby! Who knows what happens next.
Curse Words #3 ($3.99) – “Curse Words” continues to be one of the outright weirdest books, while also being just damn good. While I know Charles Soule is writing this book, this is very much a “Ryan Browne Book” in my mind, which is a compliment to Soule since I love the weirdness that Browne has been known to conjure on his own.

Matthew’s Picks:
X-O Manowar #1 ($3.99) – After Robert Vendetti’s universe-launching, career-making run, “X-O Manowar” finally goes to Valiant wunderkind Matt Kindt for a new barbaric era. Don’t miss out; with the first batch of “X-O Manowar” setting the tone for the first era of Valiant, I can only imagine what will happen in this issue.
Black Hammer #7 or Bloodshot Reborn #0 ($3.99) – Jeff Lemire is doing some amazing work these days, so please pick between one of these two jumping on points to see what awesome alt-superhero work he’s doing outside of Marvel.
Shutter #28 ($3.99) – 3rd to last issue, and last issue before a short (but still too long) break. “Shutter” is going out with a bang, and It’s not advised to miss it in its final moments.
Unworthy Thor #5 ($3.99) – Supposedly we will find out what Nick Fury told the Odinson that made him unworthy in this issue. I’m certainly curious.
Wonder Woman #19 ($2.99) – As always, buy one “Wonder Woman”. No exceptions.
Total: $18.95

Ken’s Picks:
Uncanny Inhumans #20 ($4.99): I’ve banged on about this run for too long now. Suffice to say, it’s as good a conclusion as we are going to get. A fellow contributor equated the Inhumans push to Roman Reigns and, while I don’t fully agree with the comparison, the push did some damage, but at least Soule was able to show some viability when he could.
Bloodshot Reborn #0 ($3.99): “Reborn” closed its doors and this is going to serve as the epilogue as well as the prologue to the upcoming sequel series “Bloodshot Salvation”. When Lemire and the artists were on point they were on point, so here’s hoping it’s a good end and start.
Deathstroke #15 ($2.99): The Will and the Way of DC Comics.
Total: $9.97

Brian’s Picks:
Action Comics #976 ($2.99) – It is rare that a comic contains something that can literally change its entire publishing line – that is what we have here. “Action Comics” #976 puts forth a possibility for the DC Universe that is both the most comic book-y solution to a problem possible, and also something that, if handled properly, can be truly exciting.
Continued belowGhostbusters 101 #1 ($3.99) – IDW’s Ghostbusters comics are always a lot of fun, and this new series – which brings together both the original, 1984 team with their 2016 counterparts – sees to continue that trend. To me, this is what licensed comics should always do: take the characters we know and love and tell stories that we can’t get on screen.
Curse Words #3 ($3.99) – This book is somehow hilarious, bonkers, and has a message about changing for the better. You really should be reading this.
X-O Manowar #1 ($3.99) – Valiant is going all out for its iconic character, and the idea of having, essentially, all of their top artistic talent rotating on this book is one that ensures that folks like me check it out, even if the character is not one of my favorites in their publishing line.
Total $14.96

Matt’s Picks:
Animal Crackers ($15.99) – One significant way to help anyone empathize with something else is to literally put them in the other thing’s shoes. A Freaky Friday sort of deal. Such is the case with this new graphic novel from First Second by Scott Christian Sava and Allison acton aimed at younger audiences, which deals with animal abuse in performance situations by having the protagonist kids literally turning into the animals. I think the First Second colophon is enough to warrant any attention.
