There are a lot of comics out there, but some stand out head and shoulders above the pack. With “Don’t Miss This,” we want to spotlight those series we think need to be on your pull list. At DC Comics, the publisher’s newest run of “Wonder Woman” is exploring a violent attack in West Billings, Montana that is framed on the Amazons of the DC Universe. Today it’s time to see how the people of Themyscira are responding to these acts of violence with “Amazons Attack.” Plus, Mary Bromfield is also set to reunite with some of the teammates she battled with during the “Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods” story. Here’s why you can’t afford to miss a single issue of “Amazons Attack” by DC Comics!

Who’s this by?

“Amazons Attack” is written by Josie Campbell. Campbell started off writing for Warner Bros. Animation with projects like Justice League Action and Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network. In 2022 Campbell boarded DC Comics with “The New Champion of Shazam” comic book starring Mary Bromfield with beautiful artwork from Evan “Doc” Shaner. Due to Campbell’s previous history with Shazam and the recent announcement of her taking over the main series from Mark Waid with artist Emanuela Lupacchino, it’s pretty exciting to see Campbell get to know Mary as a character during “Amazons Attack” before she boards the main series!

“Amazons Attack” is illustrated by Vasco Georgiev. Georgiev has been working on a number of comic book at publishers spanning across the industry like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” at BOOM! Studios with Jordie Bellaire and “Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain” written by Tini Howard. Georgiev has even worked on other comic book titles by DC like “Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong,” written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly.

What’s it all about?

“Amazons Attack” charts Queen Nubia’s response to the attack in Montana framed on the Amazons. Nubia teams up with Faruka, Yara Flor and Mary Bromfield to learn more about the mysterious attack threatening the Amazons and Mary.

What makes it so great?

“Amazons Attack” kicks off the debut issue by introducing the plot threads of “Wonder Woman” to show how Nubia and the rest of the Amazon characters react to the violent act framed on her people. Campbell dives deep into the situation to measure an appropriate but tense response from the Amazons. Campbell frames the issue in an intriguing way by introducing more characters from the supporting cast as Nubia starts to investigate the tense situation. It’s also impressive to see how minor elements of “Shazam!” circulate within the story to honor Mary’s appearances within the issue. Readers get callbacks to previous “Shazam!” villains and a couple of appearances from Mary’s animal companions. “Amazons Attack” carefully balances genres and dynamics across the eclectic cast of characters making up the series.

Artist Vasco Georgiev lends incredibly immersive artwork to “Amazons Attack.” The final page of the debut issue is framed in a way that emphasizes characters like Faruka from an overhead perspective within the story. There are incredibly immersive page designs and panel bleeds from Georgiev that can help make the character relationships feel more immersive when paired with strong facial expressions. There’s a wonderful panel border in the third chapter that carves a silhouette for Mary in the form of a lightning bolt mirroring her power set.

One of the strongest elements about “Amazons Attack” is how it continues the focus previous “Wonder Woman” creators, Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad with artists like Emanuela Lupacchino and Eduardo Pansica lent to the property with an extreme focus on the Amazon supporting cast. The current “Wonder Woman” series by Tom King and Daniel Sampere has a much different focus and DC has been fostering this specific take on the characters for years now. DC is smart to publish a cohesive line and continue to place the spotlight on characters like Queen Nubia. “Amazons Attack” has placed a large emphasis on the Gods of Wonder Woman as the series continues publication. This secondary genre element lends a subversive nature to the plot of “Amazons Attack.”

The second issue of “Amazons Attack” opens with another incredible high point as Campbell and Georgiev follow-up the tense cliffhanger with supernatural elements that finds our ragtag team of heroes running across New York City. Georgiev is able to render multiple characters on the page with grace featuring an epic panel where Nubia is looking at her enemy with an imposing glance. Faruka offers a smile and Yara Flor appears to be unsure of her situation within the same sequence.

“Amazons Attack” spends a large portion of time exploring the public’s reaction to the status quo with the Amazons. At first, this newscaster sequence appeared to be an exposition-heavy way to say little about the public sentiment, however these sequences are becoming more detailed as the series develops. In issue #3, Campbell and Georgiev utilize some of the sequences to find interesting things to say about the origins of the heroes within “Amazons Attack.”

How can you read it?

“Amazons Attack” is a limited series published monthly by DC Comics. The collected volume of the series has not been solicited by DC Comics. Keep an eye out for the publisher’s future solicits for an “Amazons Attack” collection. Whatever you do, don’t miss the intriguing character dynamics and interactions between heroes like Faruka and Nubia in “Amazons Attack.”
