Dynamite Entertainment’s ongoing “James Bond 007” comic is relaunching this November with writer Greg Pak (‘Planet Hulk,’ “Action Comics”), artist Marc Laming (“Wonder Woman,” “Star Wars: Doctor Aphra”), colorist Triona Farrell, and letterer Ariana Maher.
Pak described his excitement for the upcoming series in an interview with The New York Times, saying:
“I’m thrilled to have the chance to play with these classic characters, giving them the biggest surprises, the funnest toys, and the wildest plot twists we can come up with — and maybe even a surprisingly moving emotional endgame. And I’m hugely excited about this creative team, with Marc Laming giving us that sleek action and character work he does so well! Can’t wait ’til we can show you what we’re cooking up!”
Laming also added his excitement, saying he grew up reading the Ian Fleming novels and is looking forward “to do[ing] something grounded, with real bodies moving in realistic ways.”
The first six-issue arc pits Bond against a Korean mystery man in the vein of Oddjob, the bowler hat-wielding henchman from the novel (and later movie), Goldfinger. The Times describes the new character’s resemblance as “intentional[,] and their connection will be revealed as the six-part story unfolds. Exploring the character of Oddjob was the first idea that came to Mr. Pak’s mind when the opportunity to write this Bond series came along. He has devised a cat-and-mouse superspy caper that will pit Bond against the new character.” The comic will also introduce an ally for Bond in the shape of the female Agent K.
Dynamite acquired the license to produce comics based on the novels by author Ian Fleming in 2014, and since then have released an ongoing (written by Warren Ellis with art by Jason Masters), as well as a number of miniseries and one-shots chronicling the updated adventures of the British spy. This ongoing comes on the heels of the previously announced “James Bond: Origin” series out in September, which features a young version of Fleming’s incarnation instead.
“James Bond 007” #1 will feature four different covers from Dave Johnson, John Cassaday, Rafael Albuquerque, and Marc Laming respectively and will be released in November 2018.
