On Friday, in honor of Mariko Tamaki becoming the new writer of “Detective Comics,” we asked you to name the best comic book written by her. The results are in, and the winner with 28 percent of the vote is “This One Summer,” Tamaki’s acclaimed 2014 coming-of-age story, illustrated by her cousin Jillian Tamaki. To date, it is the only graphic novel to have won the Caldecott Medal, which honors the best picture book of the year.
In second place with 24 percent was “Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me,” the 2019 graphic novel illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, which was similarly the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the top spot on our list of the year’s best OGNs.
Tied for third place, with 12 percent of the vote each, were two of Tamaki’s DC Comics projects: the 2016-17 miniseries “Supergirl: Being Super,” created with Joëlle Jones, and the young adult graphic novel “Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass,” with art by Steve Pugh.
Thank you for participating, and be sure to check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll.
