Welcome one and all to Multiversity’s very own ‘Witching Hour,’ in which we take a look at Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Join me this season every Monday for my recap the show’s final season. This is it, the final episode. Let’s dive right in. Warning, spoilers ahead.

1. Into the Void

Last we left off, Sabrina Morningstar was fleeing the Void and barely made it to her magic mirror before being consumed along with the rogue cosmos that she was investigating. Meanwhile, Sabrina Spellman continues to live care free and as if no cosmic horror entities were after her, she plans her birthday celebration, as it’s only two days away. This show’s timeline has always been fast and loose, but it’s hard to believe that all four seasons of this show are to have taken place within one year. I can only suspend my disbelief only so far Netflix!

So Sabrina Morningstar comes crashing into Sabrina Spellman’s room in the middle of the night with a dire warning. The Void is coming and there’s little anyone can do to stop it. Unfortunately, Morningstar’s reality jumping shenanigans were too much for her to handle, so she dies. The coven tries to prepare for what seems like a hopeless battle, and everyone decides to meet at the Academy to draw up a battle plan. Sabrina tells Nick she needs time alone with her fallen doppelganger and decides that she’s to blame for Morningstar’s death (she is), so plans on using the Imp of the Perverse to wish the Void away. The Trinket Man conveniently shows up and offers Sabrina Pandora’s Box. He tells Sabrina that there’s a good chance that the Void can be locked away, but she’d likely be consumed too. Sabrina enters the Void and attempts to lock it away forever.

2. Switcharoo

While Sabrina is within the Void, her family and friends try to rescue her. They cannot physically transport her from the Void, but they can import her soul into Sabrina Morningstar’s body. Just as Sabrina is about to lock up the Void forever, her body falls to the ground with her soul seemingly whisked away into the body of Sabrina Morningstar. And behind the scenes, Lilith has seen all and goes to Hell to bargain for her powers back.

Lucifer, offended, more so that Sabrina Spellman now occupies his daughter’s body than the fact that she’s dead, lets Caliban off his leash and the prince of Hell gets his war with the mortal realm. Caliban and Beelzebub take control of the workers in the Kinkle mine, including Harvey’s dad, and uses them as foot soldiers to interrupt Sabrina’s birthday party. When they attack, Sabrina tries to hand herself over to Lucifer willingly, even binding her magic. When Caliban gets a little trigger happy and sends his goons to attack, Sabrina somehow manages to make all the soldiers disappear. As she gets more upset, other things start to disappear and Ambrose discovers that Sabrina has become part of the Void.

3. The Mountains of Madness

Sabrina flees to the mountains for her family safety. There, she’s discovered by Blackwood who offers to teach her how to control the Void. With no other choice, Sabrina stays with Blackwood while her friends hatch a plan to find Sabrina’s original body along with Pandora’s Box. They’ll use Pandora’s Box to lock away the rest of the Void. Prudence, Roz, Agatha, and Ambrose find Father Blackwood and Sabrina. Blackwood hasn’t been teaching Sabrina as much as he’s been preparing to sacrifice her and take the Void’s powers for himself. After getting upset, Sabrina uses her powers to send Prudence and Roz away and hints to Ambrose to come rescue her right before Blackwood enables his plan.

4. Not Today Satan

Because this is the last episode, the show needed to wrap up all lingering plot lines. So even though we were knee deep in the Void’s plot, we cut back down to Hell where Lucifer finally gets his comeuppance. Lilith stabs Lucifer with the same spear she used to kill Lazarus and takes his place as ruler of Hell.

Meanwhile, Nick returns with Sabrina Spellman’s body and Pandora’s Box. Now the real plan can begin. The coven arrive just in time to rescue Sabrina from Blackwood and half of them go to find all of the displaced people that Sabrina had sent away while the Spellmans perform a bloodletting ritual to drain Sabrina of the Void to banish it in Pandora’s Box. With some stellar performances from Lucy Davis, Miranda Otto and Kiernan Spika, we get our last look at Sabrina Spellman alive as memories of her family and friends are displayed in a montage. The Spellman Banshee appears indicating a Spellman is about to die, and Sabrina Spellman leaves the mortal realm and The Void is locked away.

5. The End

The Spellmans say a final farewell to both Sabrinas in a touching eulogy. Hilda says that she’ll move back in with Zelda and Prudence visits Father Blackwood with a chainsaw. We don’t actually get any kind of closure from the other mortal characters. We can assume Roz and Harvey and Theo and Robin live happily ever after. As for Sabrina? Her “spirit” is left in a white room filled with balloon paintings. Nick appears and discloses that he went swimming in the sea of sorrows… which okay? He killed himself to be with Sabrina? That’s a very dark ending, even for this show.

While I’ve enjoyed watching and recapping this show for the last couple years, I must say that I’m pretty disappointed by the ending. Like many episodes, this finale suffered from being overfilled. This show could have benefited from a longer season and because of that, it suffers and instead of giving a satisfying conclusion, we were treated to a lackluster finale.
