Welcome to the first edition of Burpee’s Got You Covered!

From here on out I’ll join you every Sunday to present my personal favorite covers of the week. To find these covers I survey the various titles released that week and choose my top five or so. I’ll discuss some of them and tell you what I liked and why I feel they’re my favorite of all the offerings that week. Not every cover will get a description. Only those that I have something to say about will receive the written text treatment.
My choices won’t follow any particular guidelines or demand that they have “artistic” value. Some will indeed by more artsy than others but I’m sure every once in awhile there will be a “trashy” cover that I enjoy just because I do. This is for fun and shouldn’t be considered anything but. I’m no artist by any means and lack the ability to use art terms to describe why I like certain things. Not everyone will agree with my choices. If you don’t agree and feel I should have chosen different covers than I ask that you just hit the comments below and let me know what your choices would have been. I’d love for this to be an open weekly discussion.

So without further ado let’s check out the covers!

5. Pilot Season: Murderer #1

By Marc Silvestri

There’s just something simple and fun about this cover. While I haven’t read the title itself (mostly cause the solicit makes it sound like a Dexter rip-off) it would seem the cover fits the title. The fun little ditty on the shirt of the character also produced a slight chuckle from me. Also, who doesn’t enjoy seeing a man flashing you his work tools? Wait I mean…well that is to say…

The thing that really catches my attention is the fact that while the solicitation says it is a Silvestri cover I originally had thought it was a Kenneth Rockafort piece. I was extremely shocked to see that it wasn’t. Anyone else look at that and instantly think Rockafort?

Another thing I enjoyed was the background to the piece. It allowed everything in the foreground to kind of pop and yet it still is enticing to the eye itself. All together I really liked this cover and almost bought the title because of my like for it.

4. Dante’s Inferno #1
By Diego Latorre

This cover really stood out to me. Not sure what you would call the style but it works well because it stands out against the many other titles on the shelf. Not a whole lot out there that looks like it. The way the body on the left seems to be dissipating is very cool and the negative image on the right sets the opposite side off nicely. The cover conveys a real ethereal and all together menacing vibe that is perfect for a title set to Dante’s Inferno.

This is another one where I didn’t read the title but I will be picking the game up. I hope it’s as badass as this cover.

3. Secret Six #16
By Daniel LuVisi

Great cover in a series of great covers for this title. The covers for Secret Six of late have had more in common with movie posters than with comic covers. This is not a bad thing. LuVisi does some amazing work. The black and white overtone looks great when paired with the Deadshot’s yellow hand coming from beyond the grave. It’s all very subtle but has incredible impact. It is without a doubt a instant eye draw of a cover.

Anyone else love these covers? This one isn’t as good as the Deadshot one with raining bullets but it’s pretty damn sweet.

2. Wolverine: Under The Boardwalk (One-Shot)
By Tom Coker

This is one of those where there isn’t much to say other than I really like it. While the hand holding the gun bothers me for some reason the rest of it is highly enjoyable. I dig the bloody eye skull with glasses in the background. The side profile Wolverine kneeling looks incredibly dark and cool as well. Cool piece but even I admit it may have moved further up this list than it has a right to but I like it.

What do you guys think? Enjoy the cover or too far up the list?

1. Dark X-Men #2
By Simone Bianchi

X-Man! I love this character and while I usually am not a Bianchi fan I feel like he knocked this one out of the park. The dynamic pose, the birds, everything about it just kicks so much ass it might as well be a Jackie Chan flick. Great to see this character back and especially when he’s done this well by Bianchi.

Hope you enjoyed the new column. Look forward to discussing covers with everyone every Sunday from here on out. Remember to click on the comments button if you have something to say and you want to be heard!
