Welcome back to Burpee’s Got You Covered! Not much in the way of covers this week so what should a cover review column do? Oh I know! Today we’re going to take a look back at the best of the best from 2009. So what’s on the menu? Well how about an appetizer of my three favorite variants from the last year. This is followed by an entrée of my favorite nine of ’09!

The covers I’ve chosen are covers from comics I personally buy and read. If it’s not a title I read it’s not included. So while there were some other great covers this year these are my favorites. Standard rules apply. This means I don’t intend to give artsy fartsy reasons for my choices or any other over blown explanation. It’s just what I like and that’s all. If you want to list your favorites in the comments section I encourage it. Let me know what your favorites are or why you don’t agree with mine. Bring it suckas!

So let’s begin shall we?

Best Variants of 2009

3. Ms. Marvel #38 Wolverine Variant
I just love the classic look of this cover. This image of Wolvie helping Cyke up while Sentinels close in looks amazing with this painted style. This is just one one of those covers that stuck with me through the year as one onf my favorites. Interestingly this cover is one of two in my variants list that came from the Wolverine variant month that Marvel did. If the list were any bigger there would surely be more of those covers included here.

2. Daredevil #118 Wolverine Variant
Love this cover! Every time I see it I can’t help but chuckle. Out of the covers on this list it’s the only one I didn’t purchase. I actually only got the regular version. I will own this cover though at some point. Just need to find one to buy at a decent price.

1. Thor #601 Djurdjevic Variant

Come on this cover sells itself. What do you think he’s listening to? Sigur Ros? Wolfmother? Jay-Z? It’s hard to tell but he seems content with his iPod that much is clear.

Now that we’ve covered the best variants and you’ve got a feel for how things are working here let’s move into the mother load. These are, in my opinion, the best 9 of 09′!

Best Covers of 2009

9. Amazing Spider-Man #607 by J. Scott Campbell

I know. I know. CHEESECAKE! I don’t care. I love this cover. It’s Black Cat looking great in Spidey’s uniform. This is an awesome cover that isn’t necessarily the most artsy of the year. It’s not getting hung in a museum but I’m sure it’s hanging in some rooms out there in fandom.

8. JSA #26 by Alex Ross (Covers A-C)
Alex Ross is a master of his craft. His ability to present us with our favorite characters in an uncannily realistic way is untouched by other artists. This three-piece interlocking cover is one of the best images of the JSA as a group. Everyone is here and they look like the family they’ve become over the years. Alex Ross was the king of covers over at DC and this is one of the best examples of that fact.

7. Batman and Robin #1 by Frank Quietly

That mustard yellow background is something else. The color makes it so hard not to be drawn into the image. Then once you’ve been drawn in you get one of the first looks at Quietly’s Batman and Robin iterations. I think his Robin looks kind of goofy in the face but the whole piece in general works on many levels. You have a uniquely colored background, a great pose and more importantly a look at the new Batmobile!

Complete sidetrack: I am of the opinion that a runs credibility can be figured out just by peeping it’s Batmobile concept. This concept is pretty sweet. Best Batmobile still remains the Animated series one or the Adam West version. IMO

6. Thor #601 by Djurdjevic
Thor looks badass and Asgard looks awe-inspiring. Simply an amazing piece that stuck with me through the year. Quite easily my favorite Thor cover. It’s so simple yet all at once majestic and powerful. I can’t remember what exactly happened in that issue but I know the covers for it kicked ass.

Note: This is the only comic from the last year with both the regular and variant covers on my list. The variant being #1 on that list.

5. The Unwritten #1 by Yuko Shimizu
This is one of the more creative covers of the decade not just the year. The way the words from the book just spout out to capture the man on the cover is pretty damn sweet. I’ve not seen anything like it on a cover before. While it is creative as all hell I just couldn’t get myself to move it up the list anymore. Subsequently, I’m sure to catch hell from some for putting it where it is on the list when compared to some of the stuff above it. Let me state again though there is no criterion here other than I like the shit for whatever reason. So hate me for it or agree. Either way hit that comment button and we can discuss.

4. Invincible Iron Man #20 by Salvador Larroca
Everything about this cover is cool. Not just the art on the cover. The cover’s art is a great piece but the trade dress that was introduced with this cover helped to make it look smooth as shit. It stands out from other titles and is an instant eye attractor. It is probably, as a whole, one of the best looking covers from the last year. Much like The Unwritten this is a great artistic cover. If this was a cover review that had some kind of artistic reasoning behind placement on the list this cover might be a little higher on it. Unfortunately, this whole thing is just based on my likes, which have no reasoning.

3. Adventure Comics #2 by Francis Manapaul
I’m a huge Superboy fanboy. In 7th grade all I wanted was a leather jacket and circular sunglasses. I thought Superboy was just plain badass. As with many things

Anway…with the return of Superboy and an A-List team like Johns and Manapaul I was stoked for this title to hit. My main want from this book though was for Superboy and Wonder Girl to finally touch base. I mean there was so much to talk about. Where would their relationship go?! Well, this cover made me feel all fan giddy. The cover just pulls the right strings. I think this is a solid placement for this cover. It was really close to being my number one but when push came t shove my number one couldn’t be denied.

2. Secret Six #15 by Daniel LuVisi
Awesome title that doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Just wanted to point that out first and foremost. It has nothing to do with the cover list we got going here but I feel the need to make mention when possible.

This cover is BADASS! Deadshot just looks so freaking cool having just unloaded some rounds and having the shells raining down on him. Throw in the fact that the cover looks like a movie poster for a killer action flick and you have a cover that you’d have to split you’re wig to forget. The only thing keeping it out of the number one spot for me is the all too clear realization that Deadshot is sporting a belly shirt/vest. Let’s be honest though, who’s going to give that guy fashion advice? Not my ass.

1. Blackest Night #2 by Ivan Reis

This is my favorite cover of the last year. I love that Hal is the only real color surrounded by black shadowed Black Lanterns. My LCS has a poster of this hanging up and I want it sooooo bad! It’s just such an awesome Ivan Reis image. The artist has done all GL fans a solid through this series and this cover is one of the best examples of it. If fans are lucky Reis will continue to function in some capacity in the GL neck of the woods for some time to come.

I know I’m probably a little bias in my decision because I’m a total GL mark but I don’t even care. This is an image that I get trying to put lower on the list for the sake of not being ridiculed for marking out. I couldn’t do it though. For me this was MY favorite cover and there was no amount of talking myself out of it for the sake of impressing my peers with my ability to choose the most creatively ground breaking artsy covers. It is what it is and for the Burpness it’s numero uno.

So hate it or love it this was my favorite 9 of ‘09. What do you think? What were your favorites? Hit that comment button and let me know. Thanks for bringing your eyes to this column and spending some time with me on your hopefully lovely Sunday afternoon. Next week, we’ll return to our regularly scheduled program of me putzing through a list of covers you may or may not agree with. It’s fun though right?! See ya next week suckas!
