Got You Covered is back this week, now appearing each and every Friday right here on MC. This was an awesome week for covers. In fact, there were 9 books on my list for 5 slots, but only 5 could make it. Check out after the jump to find out my top five for this week.
5. Northlanders #48
Art by: Massimo Carnevale
You know it’s a good week in covers when a Massimo Carnevale cover doesn’t make the cut AND another one doesn’t make it past number five. But that’s the nature of the beast. I prefer this Northlanders cover to his Conan the Barbarian one, with the lonely, rocky beach with the lost and shattered Viking ship on it. I love the coloration the sun causes on the rest of the landscape, and it’s just a beautiful image. But not the best of the week.
4. The Unwritten #34
Art by: Yuko Shimizu
Clearly I’m a fan of good ol’ Yuko, and while this isn’t one of my favorite covers of hers to-date, this is still a wonderfully detailed and engaging cover. No matter what she’s going for, Yuko is one of the best at creating covers that stand out amidst a sea of other comics. That stands for a lot in my book.
3. Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive #529
Art by: Francesco Francavilla
This week brought the end to the recent Black Panther book, which is a shame for a lot of reasons. One of which is that it consistently featured fantastic covers from Francisco Francavilla. This was no different, with a beautiful pulpy blend of blacks and dark oranges with Black Panther looking over his adopted neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a superb cover, but that’s what we always get from Mr. Francavilla.
2. Blue Estate #9
Art by: Viktor Kalvachev
I love this cover. I must admit, it’s one of the few books that I absolutely have no clue as to what is going on in it, but this cover does an incredible job of selling it. First off, Viktor Kalvachev is a wonderful artist. Anything he does is amazing. But this? With a Slave Leia lookalike resting on a Stormtrooper helmet? Someone in the background set in carbonite? The fantastic credits off to the left? The awesome text saying “Survival Instinct?” This cover absolutely rules. Bravo to Mr. Kalvachev. I’m sorry I couldn’t give you number one.
1. Punisher MAX #22
Art by: Dave Johnson
Oh man. I have to say, this comic was amazing. The cover is absolutely no different, with the usage of entirely black and white paying homage to the Punisher logo, a tree showing a Punisher style skull in its core, and the view entirely from a grave. Even for someone who is out of this world talented like Dave Johnson, this piece was a stunner. Everything the guy touches is gold, and his Punisher MAX covers were some of the best of his career.
