This week on Multiversity’s Got You Covered, we have a lighter load than usual – I only found four covers I really quite loved – but all of them are pretty damn great efforts. Find out who I picked after the jump, and look next week for both another weekly edition and a look at the month in covers.
4. Fables #116
Art by Joao Ruas
It definitely helps that I dug the hell out of this issue and am really enjoying the “Cubs in Toyland” arc overall, but this cover from Ruas is another stunner. I love the way he blends colors, with the grayscale-ish of Dare and the clockwork tiger he’s riding matching up against with the dark yellows of the background in a very visually engaging way. Not only that, but when you read the story, it makes sense as to why the colors would separate the pair from the visuals overall. Another damn fine effort by Ruas.
3. The Manhattan Projects #2
Art by Jonathan Hickman
Hickman’s graphic design efforts like this, compared to other covers, are an exercise in minimalism. The stark black matching up against the primary, button-like image is something that pops right off the rack, and I love the way the lightning bolts create an indicator of sorts as to what issue it is. It’s clever, engaging design, and it doesn’t feel like anything else on the racks. Isn’t that a very good thing indeed for a cover? It seems to me that a cover that does its job should stand out amongst its brethren. This one does that very well.
2. Prophet #24
Art by Giannis Milonogiannis
Fanboy alert! I’m a big fan of Giannis Milonogiannis’ art. The guy is extremely gifted, and this cover only gives us a taste as to what we can expect from his upcoming work on this title. This image is a beautiful depiction of at least part of what goes on inside of the issue, as one of the many John Prophet’s goes head-to-head against the giant Sleepingman (literally, not in a fighting way). It’s a powerful image, and one that shows the level of detail and weight Milonogiannis is capable of giving an otherwise simple image.
1. Rachel Rising #7
Art by Terry Moore
Let me take this time to do two things:
1) This cover is fantastic, blending an extremely atypical but striking color palette with linework that seems uninked in parts, giving it a scratchy, nighmarish feel. It’s top notch work from Moore, a guy who is known throughout comics as one of the better artists around. Or at least he should be.
2) This comic is fantastic. I genuinely think that with each and every passing issue, this book gets better and better. I’m a big fan of “Strangers in Paradise” and “Echo,” but this comic has me extremely hooked and completely over my previous sadness of the latter book coming to an end. It’s scary, intense, filled with great and fully realized characters, and it handles big moments about as well as any comic does. It’s an incredible comic, and it deserves a bigger audience. The first trade is out now, and I couldn’t recommend it enough. If you’re a fan of good comics, you should be reading “Rachel Rising.” That isn’t a suggestion – that’s a fact.
