After a long hiatus, Got You Covered returns because this is an outrageously great week of covers. Let’s get to that, shall we.

5. Sex #3
Art by:
Piotr Kowalski

While I have to admit, I’m not crazy about this book, the covers have been pretty stellar so far. This one is particularly great, and I love how much the cover resonates off the rack (poor choice of words) when in your comic shop. One of the primary tasks of a cover, in my mind, is to draw a reader’s attention if they are just looking through comics deciding what to buy. This bad boy? This crushes that aspect of covers. It also is just well designed and executed, and is a beauty overall. Well done to one of the breakout artists of the year in Kowalski.

4. Occupy Comics #1
Art by:
Mike Allred

The power of a cover. I very nearly purchased this comic just because I enjoyed the cover so much. Mike Allred has an amazing gift to bring a lot of heart and warmth to whatever he’s working on, and this Occupy Comics cover, even though I don’t explicitly understand what it means, is just phenomenally beautiful and elegantly understated. I love the imperfect nature of the execution, and the white space enveloping it on the outside. This is a lovely cover, existing in contradiction of the project for me.

3. The Unwritten #49
Art by:
Yuko Shimizu

Want to know how you can tell it was an astoundingly great week of covers? Yuko Shimizu, my favorite cover artist ever pretty much, finishes third for her most recent Unwritten cover. And it’s not because it isn’t good – this thing is brilliant, and even more valuable once you realize its skill as a storytelling device – but it’s because this was just such a competitive week. This hypnotic, ingenius design highlights the intelligence and storytelling Shimizu brings to her covers, and it perpetually delights me. Well done, as per usual, Yuko.

2. Daredevil #26
Art by:
Chris Samnee

I love Samnee’s art, and I love the gleeful whimsy and adventure that is always conveyed on Daredevil’s covers. This one is amongst the best yet though, for one simple reason. HE WROTE DAREDEVIL OUT ON THE CLOTHING LINE. WITH CLOTHES. This is a beautiful, astoundingly well composed cover, and jeez louise, it’s inventive as all hell. I asked another fellow Yuko Shimizu fanboy to help me decide between this and the Unwritten’s most recent cover for #2, and it just had to be this one.

1. X-Men Legacy #11
Art by:
Mike Del Mundo

2013 is Mike Del Mundo’s year, and everyone else is just going through the motions. This guy has been absolutely crushing each and every cover he’s done, and his X-Men Legacy covers are undoubtedly his best. This cover is such a pitch perfect depiction of Legion as a character and the monster that constantly threatens to swallow him up, I hardly feel like I need to say anything else. But I do, as conceptually del Mundo stands tall, but he thrives even more so in execution. This is just a beautiful, beautiful cover, and it stands out even amongst del Mundo’s collection. Phenomenal work from the guy who is bar none the best cover artist so far in the first half of 2013.
