Multiversity’s Got You Covered (Week of 5/9/12)

Another week, another set of glorious covers. This one went seven deep for contenders, but only five could make the cut. You can see that list in reverse order below.

5. Mystery in Space #1
Art by Mike Allred

There might have been covers with more storytelling power or any number of other qualities, but man, few do whiz bang awesomeness as well as Mike Allred. The guy is one of the best in the business, and everything about his art just reminds me of discovering comics for the first time and all the fun that was for me. With a book like “Mystery in Space,” isn’t that the vibe you’d be looking for?

4. Fairest #3
Art by Adam Hughes

Man, Adam Hughes sure can draw some gorgeous women. Besides that, I love the usage of the Snow Queen’s breath to write the title out. It’s just genius, and I love innovative titling on a cover. So 8 for composition, 10 for title, all in all for an average of 9.

3. Deadpool #54
Art by Dave Johnson

Dave Johnson is a great cover artist, but one of the things that amuses me endlessly about his work is how he can jump from a project like “100 Bullets” or “Punisher MAX” over to a Deadpool book and somehow still crush it even though the vibe changes entirely. I love the usage of negative space, as the black separates the two images in both a logical way and a way that accentuates the awesome of this image. Then, you have everything going on in Deadpool’s cozy love nest – “1001 jokes about Captain America,” the pin-ups of Mary Jane Watson, Elektra and others, the Avengers poster – it all just entertains to no end. A great cover.

2. Wolverine and the X-Men #10
Art by Chris Bachalo

I have major beef with those headers that both Marvel and DC have fallen in love with. That said, this cover utilizes it quite well, as the AvX header is there, Cyclops is there, and a gulf of white space allows both images to breathe separate from each other. Then, you have Wolverine attacking in the reflection of Cyke’s visor, which speaks volumes for the storytelling that exists on this page. I dig the hell out of it. Great work from Bachalo.

1. Morning Glories #18
Art by Rodin Esquejo

Esquejo is absolutely one of the best in the business, and this cover is a great example. “Morning Glories” endlessly uses its titles and logos better than anyone else around (thanks to Tim Daniel for that), and, on top of that, they’re always placed to take away the least from Esquejo’s composition. As per usual, this effort is a tour de force in terms of storytelling and lighting, two things Esquejo is a beast at. Plus, you have to love that on the fallen papers shown on the foreground is where they put the creative team. Just awesome stuff from a great cover artist.
