Walter’s Got You Covered (Week of 11/03/10)

This week I step in for David, and I’m not sure if I picked a great week or an awful week to do so. Sure, there were many great covers this week, but there were almost too much! After much deliberation, I was able to narrow it down to five, though it was difficult. Follow the cut to see what I picked.

5. Scarlet #3
Art by:
Alex Maleev

Alex Maleev always makes my list. While this cover isn’t as good as the previous two Scarlet covers, it’s still very well done. Each cover has done a good job at capturing what the issue is about, and this one really captures Scarlet hunkering down and getting ready for war. The line work is really well done as well, but this is Maleev we’re talking about, so that’s a given.

4. The Boys #48
Art by: Darrick Robertson

I don’t like The Boys. I don’t like Garth Ennis’ recent work. But I would be lying if I told you that this cover didn’t make me chuckle. The iconic cover for The Dark Knight Returns #1 has been homaged and referenced so often that it is difficult to do it again without it seeming cliche. There’s something so simple about the irreverence to the classic comic that makes this silly and brilliant at the same time.

3. Baltimore: The Plague Ships #4
Art by: Mike Mignola

Mignola is another artist who will almost always make the top five on my list. The composition of this cover is very aesthetically pleasing, but the use of colors is what brought this cover to number three. We often hear the phrase “less is more,” and this cover is a shining example of what that really means.

2. Superboy #1
Art by: Rafael Albuquerque

This is exactly the kind of cover a #1 needs. Albuquerque has perfectly captured the Superboy vibe with this cover. He has the dynamic presence of his more mainstream older cousin/half brother/whatever-you-would-call that, with a touch of youth and liveliness tacked on. This is another cover where the colors really make it, giving the often used blue/orange contrast a bit of an inversion, with stunning results.

1. Secret Six #27
Art by: Daniel Luvisi

Bane is riding a dinosaur. Your argument is invalid.
