Marvel Comics have launched their new Marvel Digital Originals (MDO) label today which is aimed at audiences that “experience… characters digitally” through Marvel’s TV offerings on Netflix, ABC, Freeform and Hulu.
The launch of the label comes alongside the release of “Jessica Jones” #1, which is available today. The new ongoing series is written by Kelly Thompson (“Hawkeye”) and drawn by Mattia de Lulis (“Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor”). Editor Nick Lowe said that Jessica Jones co-creator Brian Michael Bendis suggested Thompson as his successor on the series because “he was impressed by her depiction of Jessica in ‘Hawkeye.’” De Lulis was brought into the team because his artwork had the “slick neo-noir vibe” that was necessary for the book.
The series starts with ‘Blind Spot,’ which follows Jessica as she continues her life with Luke Cage and their daughter, Danielle. But things get complicated as Jessica becomes the prime suspect in an investigation, after a woman, whose case she fumbled up, is found dead in her office. Each issue in the series will be 40 pages, rather than the usual 20 pages found in print comics, allowing for the full story to be told in three issues, over three months, rather than six issues in six months. Like a TV show, there will be a hiatus between this arc and the next due to the release schedule. The stories, when completed, will be printed and available in comic shops.
In a statement to IGN, Nick Lowe, cited characters “like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist” being some of the “biggest sellers in the digital marketplace,” and as being the force behind the new label. Dennis Hopeless and David Messina’s “Cloak and Dagger,” which launched last month, has now been folded into MDO.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see what other series will be apart of the MDO either, with three more titles being revealed this Saturday, July 21 on the IGN Live at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 stream, which can be accessed via the IGN homepage.
“Jessica Jones” #1 is available now at Marvel’s Digital Comic Shop and comiXology. The solicitation can be read below:
