With the uproar that Captain America caused when he hailed Hydra, some might be looking for a new hero to believe in. Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta want to give us that hero with America Vasquez, the star of their upcoming “All-America Comix.” She’s ready to kick some ass and figure out the secrets of existence.
The promo text for the book, as provided by The Hollywood Reporter, sets up the concept pretty well: “You wanted it! You got it! She is a hero for our time — and the time is NOW! A superpowered champion of the oppressed, AMERICA VASQUEZ is the one you’ve been waiting for! And this may be her greatest adventure of all. When she is confronted with the hidden secrets of the universe, you won’t believe the cosmic truth she uncovers! Issue #1 hits — and we do mean HITS — in 2017 from Image Comics!”
Casey is all about this sort of cosmic level intrigue, given his previous run on “Uncanny X-Men” and books like “Catalyst Comix” and “Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers.” Putting him together again with artist Nick Dragotta is sure to produce a comic that will have comic fans very interested.
Most fans will probably note that America Vasquez looks quite a bit like Marvel’s Miss America Chavez. This is likely no accident, as Casey and Dragotta created the character for Marvel back in 2011. Though fans have given the character a fervent following, she’s yet to headline her own title. Casey and Dragotta could be doing their own part to give that character her own book, even if it isn’t at Marvel and it isn’t really Chavez. What Dragotta’s involvement with the book means for “East of West”, his Image book with Jonathan Hickman, remains to be seen.
