As news continues to trickle in from San Diego, we have another Image book announcement: Jonathan Hickman (“East of West,” “Secret Wars”) will be launching a new sci-fi book, “Frontier,” which will see the writer return to the art side of the creative process, with layout assists by Andy Kuhn (“TNMT”).
When talking about the book, Hickman described it as “like Star Trek but super depressing.” It is set some time in the future where humanity has been kicked out of any alliance with the rest of the galactic community because we’re kind of violent and confrontational, only for the alliance to become engaged in an unexpected conflict that makes us humans look like a valuable asset.
The main focus of the book will be on the crew of a single exploratory vessel, with all the expectations that come with that and then “subverting them as hard as we can.” Hickman wanted to do a story about his hopes and fears of the world we live in right now and think “the idea that some species would take a long, hard look at humanity and think, ‘Yeah, those guys look awesome, got to have them in our Utopian society, immediately’ seems like wishful thinking.”
This will be the first time in eight years since Hickman has drawn a comic. The first arc will being compos of oversized issues, the first issue of which is expected to land in stores and online this November.
