Five Thoughts on Krypton‘s “Civil War”

This episode of Krypton’s was one of the more exciting ones so far. While it left me wanting a better payoff at the end, we are now seeing where the pieces on the chess board are ending up as we make our way towards the latter part of the season. The Voice of Rao/Braniac’s Sentry is holding onto their position after all (given the coup that almost took his life, had he still been mortal), while we have no idea what state Kandor’s turbulent government will be left in by the next episode. In addition to this, Seg and Adam Strange’s severed relationship adds a whole other wild card to the situation. How will this all play out and affect Braniac’s impending arrival?

1. Everybody Wants to Save Kandor

One of the most interesting parts of this show is the idea of everyone wanting to be Kandor’s savior, yet each person’s motivation is so different. Seg of course wants to save Kandor, but is now less sure of himself due to the knowledge that Krypton will explode if this happens. General Zod’s motivations are still unclear, although we can assume it has something to do with his future rivalry with Kal-El. Daron-Vex sees himself as the most fit person to lead the city due to his unending ego. I am personally not convinced that Jayna has been given enough reason to act as she is, betraying her code and honor in order to help with Daron-Vex’s coup. This seems disingenuous to her character. Hopefully they’ll flesh this out more in future episodes? Lyta seems to be the most altruistic one of the bunch, as her intent is to save Kandor simply because it is her home and people.

I really enjoy everyone’s different approach, as it makes for a dynamic situation that is bound to get messier as the season continues.

2. Doomsday

Here we go, we finally get a Doomsday appearance! Albeit brief, I cannot wait to see him in action! How does General Zod’s intent play into the situation? Did he already meet him in present-day on Earth? There are many questions to be answered, but the one thing we can collectively cross our fingers for is to see Doomsday destroy everything in his path. Hopefully this will be a step-up from our most recent experience with him on the big screen.

3. Adam and Seg’s Relationship

This is the first time since they met that we’re seeing Seg and Adam fight this much. They’ve had such a jolly and friendly relationship since they agreed to work together that it’s somewhat weird and uncomfortable. I hope they don’t drag their fight out too long. I’m making a bet that Seg will find out General Zod is not as he says he is, and that Seg will eventually ask for Strange’s forgiveness.

4. Seg’s Situation

With the knowledge that Krypton will explode if Kandor is taken by Braniac, Seg is now put in a difficult situation. I completely understand his new outlook in not caring about Earth and Supes as much and wanting to save his planet. How could anybody fault him for this kind of prioritizing? This is why I hope they do not have him renege on this position, as I think it make more sense than having Earth and Adam Strange’s needs first.

5. Ona

I seriously pity Ona. She has gone through some of the most mentally-dramatic events out of anyone in the show. And now she’s stuck worshipping Braniac’s Sentry? This is an awful combination, as we know that she will do ANYTHING it asks of her. I am not particularly excited to see where her character goes, but am hopeful that she will have some positive part to play by the end. That being said, I think her character is a great one that adds a whole other layer to this show.
