Welcome one and all to Multiversity’s very own ‘Witching Hour,’ in which we take a look at Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Join me every Tuesday for your weekly recap. Sabrina is the newly crowned Queen of Hell and with that title comes the responsibilities of the crown.

1. The Devil’s In The Details

This episode begins with Sabrina conversing with Nick/Lucifer. He’s locked in the dungeons under the Academy of Unseen Arts because while Sabrina’s aunts have reopened the school they would never reopen the dungeons. Lucifer toys with Sabrina, attempting to pose as Nick twice before letting the real Nick come to the surface. He’s bound by Demascus Steel and encircled in a ring of salt which should contain him. Sabrina, however, should watch her footing because she breaks the circle of salt by dragging her feet through it. C’mon. Maybe try steeping over it.

This tiny mishap later allows Lucifer to unleash a swarm of devilish little beetles that cause all kinds of havoc for Zelda’s first week as Headmistress. Lucifer, annoyed that the coven now prays to Lilith, releases these bugs as punishment. They’re tiny and hateful, and cause a myriad of hellish behavior. Two students run into some trouble while making out, Agatha calls Zelda a bitch, and Zelda slaps Agatha in turn. This leads to Sabrina’s aunts discovering the truth that Lucifer is a prisoner in their dungeon. And we’ll get to fallout from that later.

2. Primary Duties

So, as Queen of Hell, Sabrina actually has a job to do. Not only must Sabrina split her time being a cheerleader and casting spells, she has to escort damned people to Hell. We learn, as Queen, it’s her primary function. Wardwell (Madam Satan) trains Sabrina by taking her into the woods and telling her she must do this, and sends her to collect her first soul, Robert Robertson, who just wanted to be the best chess player in the world. He’s an elderly man and when Sabrina arrives is a little perplexed that Lucifer isn’t the one collecting. Sabrina takes pity on the man and instead of making him get into the black limousine bound for Hell, she tells him to hop in the white limo going to what I assume is Heaven. Naturally this pisses the kings of Hell off and they complain when she tells the court she decided to show mercy. After some back and forth arguments from Caliban and company, Wardwell promises that Sabrina will retrieve the next soul and it’ll burn twice as hot for allowing mercy for the first. The next soul Sabrina must drag to Hell is none other than Jimmy Platt, Greendale’s resident creepy Ice-Cream Man, because of course it is.

3. Meanwhile, In Scotland…

While drama continues to unfold in Greendale, Ambrose and Prudence end up at Loch Ness, as instructed by the blood voodoo magic. There they discover a mangy looking Blackwood performing some kind of ritualistic spell. Ambrose comments that Loch Ness is a place where high magics of time and space can be learned. After performing the spell, a kind of sea creature emerges, no, not that one, and bestows upon Blackwood a transparent egg. A funny little creature is in the egg and must be important because Prudence and and Ambrose catch Blackwood off guard after he offers his aged children as sacrifices. Blackwood tells them that the “Old Ones” are indeed coming and he created a temporal space and studied time magic for 15 years though only one month had passed on the rest of the world. He says Eldritch terrors are coming before being knocked unconscious. After Ambrose persuades Prudence, the pair decide to bring Blackwood and the twins Judas and now Judith back to Greendale to learn more of what Blackwood knows. I mentioned last year during one of the vision episodes that I was really interested in the “Old Ones” mythology. It seems like ultimately, this is the direction the show is going. I couldn’t be more happy. Hopefully, we’ll learn more of these Eldritch terrors sooner rather than later, and what they have in store for our favorite witch.

4. (Un)Friendly Neighborhood Ice-Cream Man

Continued below

We get a glimpse of a creepy ice-cream truck in the last episode but I didn’t think it was too important. Boy, was I wrong. Jimmy Platt is an evil individual. After getting into a horrendous crash, Lucifer found him praying to the “false God” and bargained with him first. Jimmy sold his soul for more time on Earth. Now, it seems that Jimmy had an arrangement with Lucifer, exchanging an innocent soul for seven more years on Earth. Every time a deadline approaches, he kills a child and eats their heart. Sabrina, thinking that she’ll kill two birds with one stone decides to use Jimmy’s body to imprison Lucifer, though I’m not sure why because if Nick can’t jail him, how can a crazy mortal?

Anyway, Sabrina tries to take him, doesn’t like what she hears about the child, names Lucy, and decides that she must rescue the girl first. Sabrina and the Fright Club search for Lucy’s mom and Roz using one of Lucy’s pinwheels is able to track her down with the help of the Cunning. They trace her to a freezer (dark) and Sabrina foolishly rushes in to save her only to be trapped by Jimmy. After she escapes with Wardwell’s help, the Fright Club finally takes the evil ice-cream man down, and Sabrina literally drags him into Hell and then declares a reformation is in order.

5. Something Wicked This Way Comes

With the creepy ice-cream man out of the way the episode returns to Nick Scratch. Sabrina gets a scorning from her aunts about allowing Lucifer back on Earth. But when Ambrose and Prudence returnan opportunity presents itself. The Spellmans transfer Lucifer into Father Blackwood, much like how he was trapped in Nick Scratch. So in the end, Sabrina gets her boyfriend back, however, I don’t think it’s going to be as easy as it seems. Lucifer is definitely still a major force here and I don’t see him sitting out the rest of the season in confinement. The Devil always has some tricks up his sleeve.

Stray Thoughts

– Good on Theo, looks like he has a new crush.
– Looks like there’s a carnival rolling into town and the scene is played as we’re reminded that the “Old Ones” are returning.

Tune in next week to see what’s in store for our heroes.
