Simon & Schuster Publishers — one of the Big Five book publishers in the world — will be launching a new comics imprint this spring, Gallery 13. Much like Macmillion’s First Second and Scholastic’s Graphix, Gallery 13 will release “both fiction and nonfiction” graphic novels made up of “original content and adaptations”. For their debut line, Gallery 13 is releasing new books from Jeff Lemire, Stephen King, and French cartoonist Christophe Chabouté.

“Visual storytelling has become a major part of the entertainment market,” publisher Jennifer Bergstrom said in the announcement. “By forming Gallery 13, we look to put our own stamp on this modern narrative trend with exceptional books from remarkable authors and artists.”
To start, Gallery 13 will publish a new graphic novel by Jeff Lemire titled “Roughneck” in April 2017. It’s about two siblings coming together to “break the cycle of abuse and violence that has overwhelmed their family.”
In May, they will release “Alone”, about a lighthouse keeper who experiences the world through his dictionary. Originally published in 2008, the book is finally making its American debut. This is exciting because we need more exposure to international comics.
Finally, Gallery 13 plans to reissue the 1982 adaptation of Stephen King’s Creepshow, a horror anthology film originally directed by George Romero.
This also follows the announcement that Dynamite will be publishing a Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys comic, both published by Simon & Schuster.
