“Getting it Together” #1

By | Oct 9, 2020 | Reviews

Fair warning: This comic portrays and discusses sexual activity in fairly graphic fashion and as a result is for readers over the age of 18. Comic books, especially American comic books, tend to live off of spectacle and action. For most Americans, the default vision of a comic book usually involves a muscle bound hero/heroine, […]

“Norse Mythology” #1

By | Oct 8, 2020 | Reviews

Neil Gaiman needs no introduction, and while his work has come in the form of novels, comics, films, film adaptation of novels, short stories, you name it — “Norse Mythology” #1 offers us the rarer comic adaptation of a pre-existing piece of fiction. While the packed team doesn’t offer anything truly groundbreaking here, “Norse Mythology” […]

“We Only Find Them When They’re Dead” #2

By | Oct 8, 2020 | Reviews

It’s not surprising that space is a popular setting. Space is a beautiful set of contradictions, it’s beautiful and infinite but also cold and isolating, an opportunity for endless adventure but with plenty of opportunities to lose yourself along the way. Good science fiction gives an author the ability to explore all of these different […]

“The Witches”

By | Oct 7, 2020 | Reviews

The Witches is undoubtedly the most terrifying of all of Roald Dahl’s stories: the 1990 film adaptation starring Angelica Huston was one of the most disturbing things I ever saw as a boy, and I absolutely dreaded reading the book, knowing as I turned the pages that I’d inevitably see Quentin Blake’s revolting depiction of […]

The Webcomics Weekly #107: Kindly Webcomics Artists Swearing for Bloopers (10/6/2020 Edition)

By | Oct 6, 2020 | Reviews

Maybe it's the fall here in the northeast but I have been craving some Great British Bake Off, but specifically uncensored bloopers of the hosts cursing up a storm to make sure a take can't be used. What good eggs those hosts are. We need more good eggs in this world. What's new with us? Well, welcome back "The Otherknown," which has swapped weeks to join "A Better Place" on these, the odd weeks. We've also some good, good "Trekker" action as well as two newbies! "Skye" and a new ongoing "Mr. Boop," which promises to be. . .well, absurd. Let us know what you think in the comments and DFTBA.

Remembering Amalgam: Lobo the Duck

By | Oct 5, 2020 | Reviews

Let’s be honest, if the title doesn’t grab you, there’s nothing else I can say to make you read the next review in our journey through Amalgam Comics. “Angel Sanctuary 9 & 10”

By | Oct 4, 2020 | Reviews

Somewhere in these two books I learned that the humans of this manga world learn all about this world’s particular mythology in school. Like how the angel Raphael is a doctor. I like the idea of a world that has a religious education that gets things canonically right, no matter how weird “right” is. By […]

“All Together Now”

By | Oct 1, 2020 | Reviews

Last year’s “All Summer Long,” the start of the ‘Eagle Rock’ series by Hope Larson, was one of the best comics of 2019. Larson managed to make me nostalgic for middle school, which is something I wasn’t aware was possible, and made a number of difficult connections with the work. “All Together Now,” the second […]

Remembering Amalgam: Generation Hex

“Angel Sanctuary 7 & 8”

By | Sep 27, 2020 | Reviews

Angel Sanctuary is like a soap opera. Characters like to make sudden pronouncements of betrayals, and then monologue for pages and pages about what it meant. In any normal comic, this would the finale. In “Angel Sanctuary”, it’s a Tuesday. By Kaori Yuki Setsuna, in the form of Alexiel, must return to Earth to protect […]
